Phil Hartman

Phil Hartman

1980s Alumni

Phil was a beloved member of The Groundlings from 1975 to 1986. His production of "Olympic Trials: A Chick Hazzard Mystery", in which he starred as detective Chick Hazzard, was chosen to represent The Groundlings in the 1984 LA Theatre Olympics. Phil co-wrote 1985’s PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE with fellow Groundling, Paul Reubens, and portrayed Captain Carl in the original PEE-WEE HERMAN SHOW and on PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE. Phil is perhaps best known for his eight-year stint on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, his character voices on THE SIMPSONS, and as a cast member of NEWS RADIO. Phil was taken from us, much too soon, in 1998. The Groundlings Theatre was dedicated to his memory in 1999. He is missed.
